How To Tell Which Rodent Is In Your San Diego Home

Posted on by jdroach

While there are many different types of rodents, each with distinct features, you may not be able to know which kind of rodent is overrunning your home since they are nocturnal. You probably won’t see these furry creatures scurrying around your home when you have an infestation because they are usually only active when you’re asleep.

However, when rodents are creeping around your home at night, they do leave something for you to identify them by…Droppings!

Rodents can be identified by their distinct physical features as well as excrete. Here are some descriptions for the droppings of the most common rodents in San Diego: House Mouse, Roof Rats & Norway Rats.

House Mouse

Small, black, oval shaped – About the size of a grain of rice. Also, droppings are pointed at end with a size range between 1/8” and a 1/4”.

Roof Rat

Droppings are larger in size compared to feces of a house mouse – About 1/2 inch. The shape is long, spindle shaped & curved.

Norway Rat

Larger droppings, usually about ¾ inch & have blunt or rounded ends.

With fresh rodent droppings, you can assume that rodents are currently infesting your property. New rodent droppings will be soft and look wet. Older droppings will appear dull & become hard and brittle after a few days to a week.

Take precaution when inspecting rodent excrete as they carry diseases.
