Spring Cleaning: Protect You & Your Family from Rodent Virus

Posted on by jdroach

The phrase “a clean home is a healthy home” couldn’t be more true as rodent season creeps around the corner. When rodents get in your home, a series of problems will occur. They can range from a foul stench from droppings & urine to power outages caused by rodents chewing on wiring in attics.

While these problems can affect your home’s appearance & the quality of living, rodents can create another problem that directly targets your health.

Rodent droppings, urine, or saliva from mice, primarily deer mice, emit the aerosolized virus, Hantavirus, which can infect humans by inhalation. After being exposed to the virus, symptoms appear within two to four weeks & can include fatigue, high fever, muscle aches, cough, vomiting, & diarrhea.

The Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome fills the lungs with fluid and can cause respiratory failure.

To avoid this potentially life-threatening disease, you must understand how you can be infected & tips to prevent infection.

Humans can become infected by breathing in contaminated dust particles from nests, fluids, or waste from mice. The dust can travel when you are cleaning enclosed areas such as a home, shed, or attic space. Hantavirus is not contagious between two people.

Preventing an infection from Hantavirus will require you to regularly clean your home. Surgical masks are recommended when cleaning.

If you are entering a vacant structure or area that hasn’t been used in a while (attic, closest), ventilate the space by opening doors & windows and leave the area for at least 30 minutes.

Upon your return spray surfaces, carpet, and other areas with disinfectant. Then leave again from another 30 min.

If you spot any mouse nests or droppings, spray them directly with a chlorine bleach solution and let sit for 30 minutes. After that dispose of waste or materials with rubber gloves & seal in plastic bags.

Wash all areas that were touching the droppings or nest material again with bleach or disinfectant spray. Vacuuming should not be preformed until areas have been thoroughly decontaminated. The first vacuum should be done with enough ventilation.
